Dental crowns

Dental crowns are prosthetic capsules placed over the teeth to restore their shape, size and function.

To create a dental crown we take the impression of the dental arch concerned, then the tooth will be filed to be able to adapt the crown. Initially, before making the definitive crown, we insert a temporary one, with which you can chew without problems.

When You Need a Dental Crown

There may be several cases in which you may need dental crowns:

  • Root canal treatment: if you have a tooth affected by deep decay, which cannot be treated with a simple filling, then that tooth must be devitalized. A crown will then be placed on it.
  • Aesthetics: a dental crown can improve the appearance of a particularly discolored or even chipped tooth.
  • Cracked teeth: they are teeth at risk, which can break permanently if not protected with a dental crown.
  • After a dental implant: the implant replaces the natural root of the tooth. A dental crown is placed over the implant to complete the total restoration of the missing tooth.

The Materials of Dental Crowns

Which material to choose for the crowns? Metal ceramic, simple ceramic, semi-noble ceramic or zirconium? The choice is obviously linked to your budget and your wishes.

Currently zircon crowns are the best solution for replacing missing teeth as they have several advantages compared to metal ceramic, simple ceramic and semi-noble ceramic crowns.

  • Metal-ceramic dental crowns: they are made up of an internal metal structure covered in ceramic. They are very aesthetic and resistant.
  • Simple ceramic crowns: they are made of porcelain or ceramic, suitable for patients with metal allergies.
  • Zirconium crowns: they are the most resistant and are also 100% biocompatible. Zirconium also has a long service life and is especially suitable for posterior dental crowns, in which a higher pressure is produced during chewing.

How to Take Care of Dental Crowns

Taking care of dental crowns must become a habit: the artificial crown protects your tooth or replaces it because you have lost the natural one. You must therefore have a rigorous and daily care of your teeth.

  • Always brush them after meals.
  • Use dental floss or an interdental brush every day.
  • Periodically rinse with mouthwash.
  • Avoid chewing foods that are too hard.
  • Have your teeth and dental crowns checked by your dentist at least every 6 months.
