Implantology – Dental implants: phases and advantages
Dental implants are a modern dental technique used to give the patient full chewing function and a new smile.
The natural tooth is made up of two parts: the crown, the visible part, and the root, embedded in the bone of the upper or lower jaw.
A dental implant replaces the root of the tooth: it is therefore an artificial root, inserted in the jaw or jaw. It is usually a titanium or titanium alloy screw, a biocompatible material that reduces inflammation and allergies in the oral cavity, integrates perfectly with the bone and resists any pressure due to chewing.
What is a dental implant made up of?
Dental implants consist of 3 parts:
- The artificial root or screw: in reality, an implant means the screw inserted into the jaw bone, which therefore replaces the missing natural root. It can be of various lengths, depending on the anatomical needs of the patient. It can be made of titanium or zirconium.
- A support structure: it is the element that connects the implant to the dental crown. One part is located inside the gum, the other protrudes like a pin on which the crown will be fixed.
- The ceramic dental crown identical to the natural tooth, so much so that you won’t find any aesthetic differences.
The phases of dental implantology
How are dental implants inserted? Here is the procedure we perform to restore the smile to our patients with a dental implant:
- Diagnosis: during the first free visit, our medical team will perform in-depth diagnostic and instrumental tests in order to guarantee you a personalized treatment plan based on your real clinical needs and in line with your aesthetic and functional expectations.
- Operation: in this second phase we proceed to insert the implant into the bone. The operation takes place under local anesthesia.
Osseointegration: now you have to wait a few months (from 3 to 6 months) for the dental implant to be integrated into the bone. - Final phase: finally, the specialist will mount the superstructure to the implant, on which the dental crown will be fixed.
Advantages of dental implants
We have mentioned that a dental implant allows the patient to regain both an efficient masticatory function and a natural smile, both affected by the lack of one or more teeth.
Choosing dental implants instead of relying on mobile bridges has several advantages:
- Dental implants are aesthetically identical to natural teeth
They are permanently and securely attached, with no adhesives of any kind - They do not cause any problems for the neighboring natural teeth
- They are an extremely long-lasting solution if you perform proper oral hygiene on a daily basis.
- High success rates: since 2009 we have performed over 12,000 implant operations, ensuring our patients a 98% success rate (in the unlikely event of implant failure, we perform a new free operation at our expense, reimbursing flight expenses). Percentage that reaches 100% with computer-guided implantology, a painless technique without cuts that ensures maximum precision thanks to highly advanced software that allows virtual 3D simulation of the intervention
- Stability: no chewing problems and no risk of movement of the artificial tooth.
